Pistons Favored Versus Simmons-less 76ers

We were fading the 76ers against the spread at the Pistons with our free NBA pick Tuesday night even before the announcement Ben Simmons would miss. Read more to find out why:

76ers at Pistons (-1, 215.5)

Line Movement:

Sharps are pounding the Pistons on the NBA oddsboard. Getting nearly 40 percent of the bets across the top online sportsbooks, the line has crossed the fence from a -3 initial offer in favor of the 76ers to -1 for Detroit. The over-under is also in retreat, down to 215.5 from a 219 opener. Action is split 51-to-49 for the total.

Tips & Trends:

The catalyst for the low-scoring, Pistons swing is largely due to the anticipated absence of G Ben Simmons. Philly head coach Larry Brown said the second-year star is doubtful with a back injury. Simmons, who missed Saturday’s 130-111 romp over the Magic, did not partake in the team’s morning shootaround due to tightness.

Detroit C Andre Drummond is good to go after battling the flu earlier in the week. The big man controlled the paint in each matchup against the Philly last season, going 0-4 SU and ATS altogether. Since Brett Brown took control of the Sixers, however, Drummond posts 14.3 points, 13.4 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game in the series.

Pistons F Blake Griffin is off to a torrid start, coming close to winning Eastern Conference Player of the Week with 29.5 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.5 assists in the team’s first pair of outings. His 33 points in a 118-116 win over the Bulls last time out was a career-high with the franchise since coming over from the Clippers.

Pick:

Bettors need to be weary of the 76ers shooting form headed into this one. Philly went 3-7 ATS on the road last season when coming off a home game shooting less than 48 percent from the floor. It failed to cover a -1.2 average line by 3.6 points per game in this spot, hitting a pedestrian 46 percent from the floor. Detroit offered value even before the Simmons announcement, and there is still room left laying the home team at -1 points. Pick Detroit -1.
